Mountmellick

Mountmellick is located in north Laois, 23km south-east of Tullamore, 11km north-west of the County Town of Portlaoise and 12km from junction 15 on the M7 motorway.

Mountmellick town centre is cruciform in shape, comprised of a main street which is terminated at each end by road junctions. It has a number of fine Georgian buildings and one of the finest examples of a Georgian square in Ireland, O’Connell Square, formerly known as Drogheda Square, which dates back to the late 1700s. The main street is comprised of a mix of commercial and residential properties, predominantly two and three storeys in height and which maintain a continuous building line for the majority of its length.

Transport
Infrastructure

The N80 Tullamore-Enniscorthy Road routes through the centre of Mountmellick, providing a direct connection to Tullamore to the north and Portlaoise and the M7 and M8 Motorways to the south. The R422 Regional Road also routes through the town, providing a connection between Junction 15 on the M7 Motorway and Birr.

Local Amenities

Amenities in Mountmellick include playing pitches, including Mountmellick GAA, a children playground at Mountmellick Amenity Area, Mountmellick Library and Mountmellick Arts Centre and there are a number of local walking routes, including Mountmellick Heritage Trail.

Mountmellick has a population of 4,777 with a labour force of 2,104 locally and 47,582 within a 30 minute drive (CSO, 2016). The town benefits from a young population, with 32% of total population aged 19 years or younger, compared to 28% nationally and 50% aged 34 years or younger, compared to 47% nationally.

Broadband

Mountmellick benefits from the provision of fibre broadband, with a number of fibre cabinets located within the town and providing reliable broadband speeds. The town will also benefit from further improvements in broadband speeds, as part of Eir’s rollout of improved broadband services throughout the country.

Planning Context

Mountmellick is designated as a ‘Service Town’ within both the Laois County Development Plan 2017 – 2023 and the Regional Planning Guidelines for the Midland Region 2010 – 2022 and it provides an important retail, residential, service and amenity function for the local hinterland and support for the Principal Town of Portlaoise and the nearby Gateway town of Tullamore. Mountmellick is provided with zonings for the provision of additional Residential, Commercial, Enterprise & Employment, Industrial, Community-Educational-Institutional and other sustainable development in the future.
